James is a specialist registrar in General and Colorectal surgery and NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow in Global Surgery in the NIHR Global Surgery Unit at the University of Birmingham. Since 2012, he has worked in large national and international research collaborative groups to lead prospective cohort studies and randomised trials targeted towards high-priority topics in surgical care. In response to the COVID-19, this has included the COVIDSurg collaborative portfolio which has aimed to improve data driven decision making for patients undergoing surgery during the pandemic. He is undertaking a PhD in clinical trials in Global Surgery with a particular focus on the use of telemedicine for outcome assessment.
