Dr. Miguel Cunha is a General Surgery Attending, working in the Algarve Hospital University Centre (Portimão Unit), in the South of Portugal, since 2020. He is also currently working in his PhD in Clinical Research and Translational Medicine at the University of Algarve (2021-).
He trained as a General Surgery Resident at the Algarve Hospital University Centre, and Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon (2014-2020). He did a training and research fellowship, dedicated to minimally-invasive oncologic colorectal surgery, at the Hospital del Mar, in Barcelona, Spain (2019)
His research interests and main focus include colorectal surgery and colorectal cancer, proctology, collaborative research and sustainability in surgery. He has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed indexed scientific magazines, and he presented more than 50 oral communications and lectures in national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Miguel Cunha serves within a number of committees. He is the chair of the Research Committee of The Rectal Cancer Reference Centre in the Algarve University Hospital (2020-), and he is the co-chair of the European Society of Coloproctology Social Media Working Group (2021-). He was an executive member of the PT Surg (the PorTuguese general SURgery collaborative research group) for four years (2018-2021), and he now takes part in the Advisory Board of the PT Surg (2022-). Also, he works as a trainee editor for the Colorectal Disease Journal since 2022.
