Dr. Joe Northup Dr. Joe Northup is a Bariatric Surgeon with 15 years of experience, having performed thousands of
bariatric procedures. Dr. Northup completed his residency at the Medical College of Ohio and then
went on to complete an Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Fellowship at the University of Virginia.
In addition to his clinical experience, he is highly active in the national American Society for Metabolic
and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He serves on four separate national committees including being
Chair of the ASMBS Access to Care Committee. Under Dr. Northup’s leadership the Access to Care
team received the 2019 Committee of the Year Award.
Dr. Northup has received several awards and authored numerous articles about general and bariatric
surgery. Noted for his clinical expertise, Dr. Northup has given lectures and taught numerous courses
in addition to proctoring over 40 bariatric surgeons across the U.S for sleeve gastrectomy and gastric
bypass. He was also selected by the American College of Surgeons as a site surveyor for the
MBSAQIP Bariatric Accreditation Program.
In addition, Dr. Northup has been nationally recognized for his excellence in patient care. In 2012, he
was featured in an article in the Wall Street Journal for his outstanding patient follow-up. In 2020, Dr.
Northup was named to Ohio Top Doctors and by Dayton Magazine as the Best Bariatric Surgeon. He
was also a finalist for Overall Physician of the Year for 2020.
Dr. Northup’s leadership and clinical expertise has been acknowledged by his fellow bariatric
surgeons. He was President of the Ohio/Kentucky Chapter of the ASMBS from 2013-2016. Dr.
Northup was honored to be chosen by his peers, being elected to the Executive Council of the
ASMBS in 2020. He also received the prestigious ASMBS Distinguished Service Award for 2021 for
his work in access to care.
