JSES was founded in 1991, and has 3 major characteristics:
1) it is a multi-disciplinary team consisted of more than 15,000 members, including general surgeons, thoracic surgeons, upper GI surgeons, HPB surgeons, colorectal surgeons, bariatric surgeons, urologist, gynecologist, pediatric surgeons, etc.
2) Endoscopic Surgical Skill Qualification System (ESSQS) has been established in 2004.
3) medical-engineering collaboration has been promoted to develop new surgical devices or tools with AI. In addition we have other enthusiastic activities. The academic committee conducts a nation-wide survey every two years, which clearly shows not only the rapid increase of laparoscopic and robotic procedures in each surgical field but the decrease of the perioperative complications. The educational committee has provided several useful programs such as surgical tours and suture training seminar, which are now conducted on line. We are looking forward to communicating with surgeons in the world and providing our programs as well.
